Which Style is Right for You?

Let’s face it, the search for the perfect hearing aid can get overwhelming. Sifting through the countless styles and latest technologies, learning about custom devices and the acronyms used to describe them, then finally selecting a hearing instrument — it can be mind-boggling. But while the options may seem endless, there are also many resources to help you make your decision. It’s crucial to consider not only the aesthetic you’re looking for, but also understand how your manual dexterity (the ability to make coordinated hand/finger movements), the options you need, and your lifestyle come into play. As you continue researching hearing instruments, here are a few things you need to know to help you narrow down your selection before you visit your hearing healthcare professional:

Hearing aids fall into two main categories – Customs and BTE (Behind the Ear).

Invisible-In-The-Canal (IIC) and Completely-In-Canal (CIC) are the smallest hearing aids produced today. Both are custom-fitted to match the shape of your ear canal, and reside either far into the canal or completely inside it. These hearing instruments are best for those with mild-to-moderate hearing loss and first-time hearing aid users looking for the simplest hearing solution without volume or pushbutton controls. Additional requirements for success with this style include having good manual dexterity since they must be removed daily, and good vision to replace small battery sizes weekly. Celebrate, Cheer and Charm are some of Sonic’s IICs and CICs in differing product families and technology levels that are designed to be comfortable and easily fit into your lifestyle, not to mention your fashion style.

In-The-Canal (ITC) hearing instruments are ideal for those with mild-to-moderate hearing loss and are slightly larger than IICs or CICs. But while ITCs do extend farther outside your ear, they remain very hidden and fit your ears exactly. And their size, (while some may view them as less cosmetically appealing), makes room for additional features like a volume control or program button that smaller hearing instruments cannot accommodate. With an emphasis on speech understanding and the ability to operate hands-free, Celebrate, Cheer and Charm ITCs provide outstanding natural sound with the power of our Speech Variable Processing Technology Platform.

In-The-Ear (ITE) devices are best for moderate-to-severe hearing loss, are easily adjustable and fill the outer ear. While each ITE device is custom-made to be as discreet as possible, these hearing instruments are larger in size. Which means, depending on the size and shape of your ear, you may see its face. But just like ITC hearing aids, the bigger size of ITE devices can accommodate a variety of features, like dual microphones, a telecoil, and a pushbutton and/or volume control. Celebrate, Cheer and Charm are some of Sonic’s ITE products that virtually eliminate feedback, automatically adjust to listening environments and are even compatible with Bluetooth® technology. Easy to use, its natural comfort and appeal is even harder to resist.

Behind the Ear (BTE’s)

Receiver-In-The-Ear (RITE)—also called Receiver-In-Canal (RIC)—are virtually unnoticeable when worn. All its components except the receiver (or “loudspeaker”) are contained in a case that’s worn behind your ear. Sound is directed into the ear canal through a slim speaker wire to the receiver unit, which makes for an open, more natural listening experience. RITE hearing aids are flexible, suiting mild-to-severe hearing losses. And Sonic provides a plethora of options to choose from – Celebrate, Cheer, and Charm product families offer RITEs in differing sizes (for example, nano, mini) and are especially helpful for hearing those higher-pitched voices (like women’s and children’s), because they are highly-specialized for high-frequencies. Or try Enchant, our latest innovation and the first miniRITE to be built on the revolutionary SoundDNA platform, which automatically detects and adapts to changes in your environment while simultaneously keeping speech clear, noise to a minimum and sound interactions remarkably natural. Select from Sonic’s various RITE styles and options with sophisticated colors, and a truly distinctive listening experience is yours.

Behind-The-Ear (BTE) instruments offer the most power for those with severe-to-profound hearing issues, or very small ear canals. Like RITE/RIC devices, BTE hearing aids sit comfortably behind your ear and are coupled to a dome or ear mold that rests in your ear canal. If dexterity is a challenge for you, BTEs are the right choice as these devices have easy access to push button controls and use larger batteries. The Sonic Super Power BTE Journey also has an optional indicator light, so you will always be able to tell when your batteries are running low. Explore the variety of BTE styles we offer at Sonic!
